You’ve heard the word a hundred times this week. AI this, AI that. Everyone around you talks about it like you should already understand it, and you don’t, not really. So you nod along and quietly wonder if you missed the meeting where they explained it. You didn’t. Nobody did. Most of the people using that word can’t define it either.

So here’s the plain version. AI is a tool that understands regular language and helps you do things that used to take a person. That’s it. It’s not a robot. It’s not a brain. It’s not coming to life. Think of it as a very fast, very well-read assistant that you talk to in plain words instead of code.

Here’s what most people miss: you don’t operate it with buttons or technical skills. You just tell it what you want, the way you’d ask a smart coworker. And you’ve already done a version of this for years. The autocomplete that finishes your sentences. The voice that answers when you ask your phone for the weather. The suggested replies at the bottom of your email. That’s all early AI. This is that, grown all the way up. The one skill it really asks of you, you already have. You know how to ask for what you need.

A friend of mine, a retired teacher, sat down with me last month with her arms crossed, certain this wasn’t for her. I asked her to do one thing: tell it to write a birthday message for her grandson who just made the basketball team. She typed it like she was texting me. Ten seconds later she had three versions. She picked the one that sounded most like her, changed two words, and sent it to him right there. Then she looked up at me and said, “That’s it? That’s the thing everyone’s so afraid of?”

That’s the thing everyone’s so afraid of.

The thing they called complicated was just unfamiliar. Unfamiliar is not the same as hard. You were never behind. You were just never shown.

Try This Today: Open a free AI tool, ChatGPT works fine, and ask it one real question you’d normally type into Google. Pull it straight from your day: “help me write a short thank-you note to a volunteer,” or “give me three dinner ideas using what’s in my fridge.” Don’t study it. Just ask, and see what comes back.

Because here’s what nobody tells you: you don’t need some big, impressive “AI project” to feel the difference. The magic shows up in the small, repetitive stuff that quietly eats your week. The emails. The planning. The “ugh, where do I even start” tasks.

Here are five of them you can hand off this week. Pick one. That’s all. Let it earn your trust, then come back for the next.

1. Write the email you’ve been avoiding

You know the one. The follow-up. The thank-you. The announcement that’s been sitting in your head for three days.

Don’t stare at the blank screen — describe it out loud to AI and let it give you a first draft to shape. Try: “Help me write a warm, clear email to my members about our event next Saturday. Keep it under 150 words and friendly.” You’ll go from blank page to “okay, I can work with this” in about ten seconds.

2. Turn one idea into many

This is my favorite, because it multiplies work you’ve already done.

Wrote a nice paragraph? Gave a little talk? Hand it to AI and say: “Turn this into three short social media posts in a warm, encouraging voice,” and paste your text. One piece of thinking becomes a week of content. You’re not creating more — you’re stretching what you’ve already got.

3. Explain something in plain language

We all have that topic we nod along to but don’t fully get. A contract clause. A new tool. Something you want to teach but haven’t found the words for.

Ask: “Explain this to me like I’m brand new, in plain language, with one everyday example.” No judgment, no jargon, no feeling silly for asking. It’s like having a patient tutor on call who never makes you feel behind.

4. Plan something, step by step

A workshop. A church program. A client launch. The overwhelm usually isn’t the work — it’s holding all the pieces in your head at once.

Try: “Help me plan [your event]. Give me a step-by-step checklist with timing, and flag anything I might be forgetting.” Suddenly the mountain becomes a list. And lists, you can do.

5. Brainstorm your way unstuck

When you’re staring at a wall — names, ideas, ways to grow — you don’t need the perfect answer. You need options to react to.

Ask for ten. “Give me 10 practical, low-cost ideas for [your goal], then tell me which 3 you’d start with.” Even if you toss eight of them, one will spark the thing you couldn’t see on your own.

Your one assignment

Don’t try all five. Pick the one that made you go “oh, I’d actually use that” — and do it this week. Ten minutes. That’s the whole assignment.

The point isn’t to become an AI power-user overnight. It’s to get a little time back, feel a little lighter, and prove to yourself that this is for you too.

“Okay, Shaun — but where do I even start? I don’t want to look foolish.”

I love that question, because it means you’re ready. So before you open a single AI tool, I want to hand you three things. Not technical things. Mindset things. Get these, and the fear mostly melts — because the fear almost always comes from believing something about AI that just isn’t true.

Here they are.

1. AI is an assistant, not a genie

A genie reads your mind and grants the perfect wish. AI does not. It’s more like a brilliant, eager new assistant who showed up to work today knowing a lot about the world in general — and absolutely nothing about you, your people, or what you actually need. Until you tell it.

So the secret isn’t typing the magic words. It’s giving good direction.

Watch the difference. Type “write me a newsletter” and you’ll get bland, beige nothing. But type “write a warm 200-word newsletter inviting my church members to Sunday’s potluck, friendly and a little playful” — and suddenly it’s useful. Same tool. The only thing that changed was how clearly you told it what you wanted.

You don’t need fancier words. You need to talk to it like a capable helper who needs the details.

2. You can’t break it — so go ahead and play

This is the one that frees people, so hear me clearly: there is no wrong way to do this.

Most beginners freeze because they’re treating AI like a test they might fail. It isn’t a test. It’s a conversation. If the first answer isn’t quite right, you don’t start over and you don’t apologize — you just say “make it shorter,” or “that’s too formal, warm it up,” or “try again, but for a younger audience.” It adjusts. Then you adjust again. That back-and-forth is the skill.

You will not break it. You can’t delete the internet. You can’t embarrass yourself in front of a machine. So poke at it. Ask the “dumb” question. Experiment like nobody’s watching — because nobody is.

3. Your judgment is still the most important tool in the room

Here’s the one nobody warns the beginners about, and it’s the most important of the three.

AI will hand you a confident answer every single time — even when it’s wrong. It can draft, suggest, summarize, and speed you up beautifully. But it does not know your values, it does not know your people, and it does not always know the truth. You do.

So the rule is simple: read everything before you use it. You are the editor. You are the final yes or no. AI brings you a first draft; you bring the wisdom, the discernment, and the heart. That never gets handed off. That’s the part of you that made people trust you in the first place — and no tool gets to touch it.

So here’s your permission slip

You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to start a conversation with a helpful assistant, stay curious, and keep your judgment switched on.

Hi, I’m Shaun.

Before we get into AI, let me tell you where I’m coming from — because it changes how you should hear everything I’m about to say.

I spent 35 years in education. More than two decades of that was in educational technology, which is a fancy way of saying I was the person in the room when something new and intimidating got rolled out, and everyone looked around to see who was going to panic first. I trained teachers, students, and administrators through wave after wave of “this changes everything.” Some of it did. Most of it didn’t.

So when people ask me if I’m excited about AI or afraid of it, my honest answer is: neither. I’m paying attention. There’s a difference.

The question almost everyone is asking

Here’s what I hear most, usually said quietly, sometimes with a nervous little laugh:

“Am I already behind?”

If that’s the question sitting in your chest right now, I want to take it off you for a second. You are not behind. You’re right on time. The fact that you’re reading this means you’ve already done the hardest part, which is deciding to look instead of look away.

But I’ll be straight with you, because that’s the only way I know how to be:

AI can’t replace you — but if you choose not to learn it, you may find yourself left behind.

Both halves of that sentence are true at the same time, and most people only hear one of them. Let me give you the part most people miss.

The part most people miss

Everyone’s arguing about the wrong question. The loud question is “Will AI replace me?”

The real question — the one that actually decides your next few years — is this:

What part of you was never meant to be handed off to a machine, and are you protecting it?

Because here’s the thing. AI is genuinely good at the busywork. The first drafts. The summaries. The “help me get started” that used to eat your whole Saturday. Let it have that. Truly. Hand it over.

But it cannot do the things that made people trust you in the first place:

• It doesn’t have your voice — the way only you say things.

• It doesn’t have your values — your faith, your standards, your sense of what’s right.

• It doesn’t have your judgment — the final yes or no that only you can give.

• And it will never have your relationships — the call, the prayer, the conversation that needs a real human heart.

That’s the part you protect. That’s the part you were never meant to outsource. My whole approach comes down to one belief: I help people integrate AI into their life and work without losing the parts of themselves they were never meant to outsource.

So the danger was never that AI would replace you. The danger is that you’d sit on the sidelines so long that the people you’re meant to serve couldn’t find you anymore. Learn the tool. Keep your soul. You can absolutely do both.
