Maybe this is for younger people. Maybe you should have started years ago. Maybe the train left and you are standing on the platform with your good intentions. So you wonder honestly: is it actually too late for someone like me, or is that just fear wearing the costume of common sense?

It is fear talking, and here is the proof. This technology, the kind everyone means when they say AI, only became something ordinary people could use in late 2022. That is barely any time at all. Almost everyone is a beginner. The “experts” you are intimidated by have, at most, a couple of years on you, and most have far less. You are not arriving late to a party that started decades ago. You are arriving early to one that just opened the doors.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! Your age and experience are not the disadvantage you think they are. A younger person may click faster, but you know what matters. You know how to write something that lands. You know when a message feels off. You know your people. AI hands its sharpest edge to those who bring judgment to it, and judgment is the one thing that takes decades to build, not days. You already did the slow part. This is the fast part.

The oldest person in one of my sessions was seventy-three, a retired pastor who apologized for “slowing us down.” By the end he had drafted a year of devotionals and was helping the woman next to him fix her prompts. He told me, almost shy about it, that he had not felt that capable in years. Too late is a story. He was busy writing a different one.

The best time to start was whenever you could. The second best time is the morning you stop arguing with yourself about it. That morning can be today.

Try This Today: Write down the age or the year you secretly think you “should have” started. Then look at it and remember that almost nobody started before 2022. You are not late. Now go ask AI one thing.

Before You Go: What have you talked yourself out of trying because you decided it was too late? Let’s name it, because I doubt it is.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. Learn AI now or get left behind. It comes at you from headlines, from coworkers, from that one relative who will not stop. And it sits in your chest like a low alarm. Are you actually falling behind, or is this just noise designed to make you panic and buy something?

Here’s the honest answer: there is no cliff, and you have not missed it. The “left behind” line is mostly pressure, and some of it is marketing. But underneath the hype there is one true thing worth hearing calmly. AI is becoming a normal part of how work gets done, the way email and smartphones did. Nobody who learned email in 2004 instead of 2001 got “left behind.” They just learned it when they were ready, and they were fine.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! The people who struggle are not the ones who start late. They are the ones who never start, because the fear convinced them it was already too late. The window is not closing. It is wide open, and it stays open for anyone who begins quietly, at their own pace, today or next month. You are reading this. You already started. The alarm in your chest is not proof you are behind. It is just an old, tired feeling pretending to be a fact.

A woman in her late fifties told me she almost did not come to my class because she figured “everyone already knows this but me.” On day one, she watched a room full of people her age fumble through their first prompts together, laughing. She emailed me later: the thing that had frozen her for two years melted in one afternoon. Not because she caught up. Because she finally saw the starting line was right where she stood.

You cannot be left behind on a road that has no finish line. There is only the next step, and it is always available to you.

Try This Today: Do one small thing with AI today. Just one. Not to catch up, but to prove to yourself the door is open. The proof quiets the alarm faster than any pep talk.

Before You Go: What does “left behind” actually look like in your mind when you picture it? Another part worries that if you let AI do too much, you stop being the one doing the work. So where is the line? When does a helpful tool quietly become a replacement for your own thinking, your own voice, your own hands?

The line is simple to feel once you name it. AI is helping when it speeds up or improves work you still own. AI is doing it instead of you when you stop thinking and just pass along whatever it hands back. Help looks like this: you have the idea, AI gives you a first draft, you shape it. Replacement looks like this: you have no idea, AI makes one up, and you send it without really reading it.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! The danger was never the tool. It is the temptation to go on autopilot. AI used well makes you more present in your work, not less, because it clears the busywork so you can spend your attention on the parts that need a human. AI used carelessly lets you check out of your own work entirely. The same tool, two completely different relationships. You decide which one you are in every single time you use it.

A grant writer told me she felt like a fraud using AI, until we looked at how she actually worked. She fed it her notes, her data, her mission, then heavily rewrote what it gave her in her own words. That is not replacement. That is a craftsman using a power tool. I told her the test: if you removed the AI, could you still stand behind the final piece as yours? She could. Every time. That is the line, and she was on the right side of it.

AI should hold the shovel, not decide where to dig. The moment you stop deciding is the moment you have handed over more than you meant to.

Try This Today: Next time you use AI, ask yourself one question before you hit send: did I shape this, or did I just forward it? If you shaped it, you are using it right.

Before You Go: Where do you want to keep your own hands firmly on the work, no matter how good AI gets? If it can invent facts with a straight face, how are you supposed to trust it for anything that matters, like a sermon reference, a grant number, or advice you pass to a client? That fear is fair. It is also the right instinct.

It is true, and you should know exactly how to handle it. AI can state something false as confidently as something true. People call this “hallucinating.” It happens because AI is built to give you a likely-sounding answer, not to look things up in a file of verified facts. So here is the rule that keeps you safe: use AI for drafting, thinking, and rewording, and verify anything factual before you rely on it.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! This does not make AI useless. It makes it a brilliant first-drafter, not a final authority. Trust it the way you would trust a sharp intern: wonderful for getting a rough version done fast, but you would never let their numbers go out under your name without a glance. Names, dates, statistics, Bible verses, legal or medical facts, quotes: check those every time. Tone, structure, brainstorming, cleaning up your own messy thoughts: lean on it freely, because there is nothing to fact-check in “make this kinder.”

A pastor almost used a moving quote AI attributed to a famous theologian. Something tugged at him, so he searched it. The theologian never said it. The quote was lovely and completely invented. He felt rattled, then relieved. Now he has a simple habit: AI drafts the message, and anything in quotation marks or with a citation gets a thirty-second check before it ever reaches the congregation.

AI is not a liar, and it is not an oracle. It is a confident helper who is sometimes wrong. Your judgment is not optional here. It is the thing that makes the whole partnership safe.

Try This Today: Ask AI for something factual you already know the answer to. See whether it gets it right. That one test will teach you, in your gut, why you always keep a hand on the wheel.

Before You Go: What is one kind of task you would feel safe handing AI, and one you would always double-check? Your email has one. Your church management software has one. Even your photo app. And you are left wondering, is this the same AI everyone is talking about, or is the word just getting slapped on everything now to sound modern?

Mostly, yes, it is the same kind of AI, tucked inside tools you already use. The chatbots like ChatGPT and the little “AI” helpers inside your software are cousins. They run on the same kind of technology, just pointed at one specific job. The AI in your email is the same engine as ChatGPT, but kept on a leash to only help with email. The “summarize” button in your meeting app is that same power, aimed at one task.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! This is actually good news for you. It means you do not always have to go to a separate AI tool and start from scratch. The help is increasingly built right where you already work. You do not have to leave your inbox to get a better-worded reply. You do not have to copy your notes somewhere else to clean them up. You are right to be a little skeptical too. Some companies do paste the word “AI” on basic features to sound current. A quick test: if it writes, summarizes, answers, or suggests in plain language, it is the real thing. If it just sorts or filters like it always did, that is the old kind dressed up.

A ministry administrator was paying for a separate AI tool and copying donor notes back and forth, frustrated by the extra steps. I asked what software her church already used. It had a “draft with AI” button she had never touched, sitting right next to the thing she did every week. Her whole workflow collapsed into one screen. She was not behind. She just had not looked down.

The future is not asking you to learn a hundred new tools. It is quietly putting help inside the ones you already trust. Look for it before you go searching elsewhere.

Try This Today: Open a program you use all the time. Hunt for a button or menu that says AI, assist, draft, or summarize. Click it once, just to see what it offers. You may already own help you have been doing without.

Before You Go: Which program you use every day just sprouted an AI button? Tell me, and I will tell you whether it is worth using.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. Prompt engineering. Prompt this, prompt that. It sounds like coding, like one more thing you are behind on. So you wonder if there is a right way to talk to this thing, and a wrong way that makes you look like you do not belong.

A prompt is simply what you ask AI to do. That is the entire mystery. When you type or say what you want, that is your prompt. There is no secret language and no password. But here’s what most people miss, and it is the whole difference between disappointment and delight: AI gives you back exactly as much as you put in. A thin question gets a thin answer. A clear, full request gets something useful.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! If you say “write a short, warm newsletter for my church members about this Sunday’s food drive, friendly but not stiff, about three paragraphs,” now they can actually help. Same assistant. Completely different result. You did not learn a skill. You just stopped making them guess.

A retired principal told me AI was “useless” for writing recommendation letters. I asked to see what he typed. “Write a recommendation letter.” That was it. I had him try again: “Write a recommendation letter for a former student applying to nursing school. She is compassionate, calm under pressure, and ran our peer tutoring program for two years. ChatGPT. Claude. Gemini. Everyone seems to have a favorite, and they say it like you should already have one too. So you freeze, worried you picked the wrong one, or that you need all three just to keep up.

You do not need all of them. You need one, and almost any of the main three will do everything you need this month. Think of them like different grocery stores. Each one carries the same basic goods, the layout is a little different, and people get loyal to the one they know. ChatGPT is the most famous and a fine first home. Claude is known for thoughtful writing and a warm, careful tone. The differences between them matter far less than the difference between using one and using none. Hopping between tools to chase a slightly better answer is how people stay busy and get nothing finished. Pick one. Learn how it likes to be asked. Get comfortable. You can always glance at another later, once you actually have a habit. The skill you build on one carries over to all of them, because the real skill is how you ask, not which logo sits in the corner.

Two women signed up for my workshop the same week. One spent a month reading comparisons of every tool, building a spreadsheet, asking which was best. The other just opened ChatGPT and started using it for her church bulletin every Sunday. Thirty days later, the spreadsheet was beautiful and empty. The bulletin lady had a system, a rhythm, and a confidence the other one was still researching her way toward.

The best AI tool is not the smartest one. It is the one you actually open. A tool you use beats a tool you compare.

Try This Today: Open the one tool you already started with. Do not download another. Ask it to help with one real task today, then notice how it responds. Maybe someone at work, or church, or online said your job is about to be “automated by AI,” and your stomach dropped a little. But are those even the same thing? And if they are different, which one is actually knocking on your door?

They are different, and the difference is simple. Automation follows fixed rules you set in advance. AI makes judgment calls in the moment. Automation is “every time this happens, do exactly that,” like a thermostat or an auto-reply. AI is “look at this and figure out a good response,” like reading a messy email and drafting a thoughtful reply.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! They work best together, not against each other. Automation handles the repetitive, predictable steps. AI handles the parts that need a little thinking. A thermostat cannot write a kind note to a grieving member. A person, helped by AI, can, and then automation can make sure it goes out on time.

You already live with both. The coffee maker on a timer is automation. The friend who reads the room and knows what to say is closer to AI. One is rules. One is judgment.

A small business owner came in convinced automation was going to replace her because a competitor bragged about it. When we mapped what her business actually needed, almost all of it required judgment: reading a customer’s tone, deciding when to bend a policy, choosing the right words. Those are not automation jobs. Those are the exact things she is good at, that AI can support but not own. She walked out less afraid and more dangerous, in the good way.

Automation can repeat what you decide. It can never decide. The judgment was always the valuable part, and the judgment is still yours.

Try This Today: Look at one task you do over and over. Ask yourself one question: does this follow the exact same steps every time, or does it need me to think? If it is the same steps, that is an automation candidate. If it needs thinking, that is where AI helps you, not replaces you.

Before You Go: What is one part of your work you assumed was “just automation,” but actually needs your judgment to get right? You do not want to hand over a credit card for something you are not even sure you will understand. It feels like signing up for a gym you will never visit. So you wait, and the waiting feels safer than the risk.

You do not have to pay anything to start, and the free versions are genuinely enough for everything in this series. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all have free tiers that handle writing, planning, explaining, and brainstorming with no card required. You could do this entire 30-day journey without spending a dollar.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! The paid versions are not “the real one.” They mostly add speed, higher limits, and a few advanced features that matter once you are using AI heavily every day. That is a problem for later you, the confident one, not for right-now you, the one just getting comfortable. Paying first is like buying professional knives before you have learned to boil water.

You already make this call all the time. You try the free sample before you commit to the membership. Same wisdom applies here. Start free. Let it earn the upgrade.

A nonprofit director told me her board kept stalling because someone insisted they needed a paid AI plan first, and there was no budget for it. I showed her, live, how to draft a donor thank-you letter on the completely free version. It took ninety seconds. The room went quiet. The barrier was never the money. It was the belief that the free door was somehow the wrong door.

The free version is not the trial version of your potential. It is the front door. Walk through it before you ever decide it is worth paying to redecorate.

Try This Today: If you have not already, create a free account on one tool. No credit card. Then ask it to do one small real thing for you. Prove to yourself the free version works before you ever think about paying.

Before You Go: What has been holding you back more, the cost, or the worry that you would not use it? Be honest with me below.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. They are not. You are not confused about whether it is useful. You are confused about the moment. What part of your actual Tuesday is this for? Without that, “just use it” is just noise.

Reach for AI at three moments in your day: when you are starting from a blank page, when something is taking longer than it should, and when you are stuck on how to say something. Those are the openings. Writing an email, an outline, a caption: blank page. Cleaning up notes, summarizing a long document, formatting a list: taking too long. Finding the right words for a hard message: stuck on how to say it.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! You do not add AI as a new task. You attach it to tasks you already do. The trigger is not “I should use AI today.” The trigger is “ugh, I do not want to start this.” That feeling is the cue. That is the moment.

You already know which parts of your day make you sigh. Those sighs are your map.

A teacher told me she never found a use for it. So I asked her to walk me through one ordinary afternoon. Parent emails she rewrote four times. A permission slip she rephrased twice. A newsletter she had been avoiding for a week. Every one of those was an AI moment she had been powering through alone. She was not missing a use. She was missing the cue to notice she was already standing in one.

You do not need to schedule AI into your day. You need to notice the moments your day already hands you, the ones that start with a sigh.

Try This Today: For the rest of today, every time you catch yourself sighing before a task, pause. Ask whether it is a blank page, a slow chore, or a hard-to-word message. If it is any of the three, hand the first draft to AI before you push through it alone.

Before You Go: What is the task that always makes you sigh before you start it? Tell me, and we will find the AI moment hiding in it.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. You are good at it. So when people say AI is the next big thing, part of you shrugs. Isn’t this just search with extra steps? You do not want to relearn something you already do well, and you do not want to be sold a fancier version of free.

AI is not a smarter Google, and using it like one is the most common beginner mistake. Google finds things other people already wrote and hands you a list of links to go read. AI makes something new for you, on the spot, based on what you asked. One points you to answers. The other writes one with you.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! Because AI talks back in full sentences, people type tiny search terms into it, like “best soup recipe,” get a bland result, and decide it is overrated. The tool was not the problem. The ask was. AI rewards a full request the way a good assistant does. “I have chicken, rice, and spinach, no time, and a picky eight-year-old. Give me one simple dinner.” Now it shines.

You already know how to give clear instructions to a person. That is the skill that transfers, not your search habits.

A retired man in one of my sessions kept typing two-word phrases and getting frustrated. I asked him to imagine he was leaving a voicemail for a smart, willing assistant instead of typing into a search bar. He tried again, full sentences, real context. His face changed. “Oh,” he said. “It’s not looking things up. It’s helping me think.” Yes. That is exactly it.

Google answers the question you typed. AI helps you finish the thought you could not. That gap is the whole reason this moment is different.

Try This Today: Take something you would normally Google in a few words, and instead write it as a full request with context, like you are asking a capable person. Watch how much better the answer gets when you give it more to work with.

Before You Go: What is something you have been Googling for years that you could try asking AI to actually help you do instead? Share it below.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. and a budget to match. So you wonder, fairly, what any of this has to do with you. You do not have a team. You have a to-do list, a calling, and not enough hours. You do not need a robot. You need a little breathing room.

For a regular person, a small church, or a one-person business, AI does one main thing: it gives you back time on the work that drains you, so you can spend it on the work that matters. That is it. It drafts the email you have been avoiding. It turns your messy notes into a clean newsletter. It writes the first version of the grant paragraph, the volunteer request, the social caption, the lesson outline.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! The win is not “do something impressive.” The win is “stop staring at a blank page.” AI is best as a first-draft partner and a thinking helper, not a replacement for your judgment. You still decide. You still edit. You still bring the heart. It just removes the cold start.

You already do the hard part, which is knowing what your people need. AI handles the part that was only ever slow, not sacred.

A woman running a one-person bookkeeping business told me she dreaded Mondays because of client emails. We sat down and built her a simple routine: paste the rough thought, ask for a warm and professional version, send. Her Monday backlog went from two hours to twenty minutes. She used the time she got back to call her mother. That is the whole point. The tool gave her back a piece of her life.

AI does not make you less human. Used right, it hands you back the hours that were keeping you from the human parts in the first place.

Try This Today: Think of one task you have been putting off because starting it feels heavy. A thank-you note, a flyer, a tough email. Open your tool, describe it in one sentence, and let it write the first draft. You only have to react to it, not create it from nothing.

Before You Go: What is the one task in your week that drains the most energy for the least reward? Name it below, and I’ll tell you how I’d hand it to AI.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. Are these the same thing? Is ChatGPT the one I’m supposed to use, or is there a better one I don’t know about yet? You feel like everyone got a map and you’re standing at the entrance without one.

No, they are not the same thing, and that is good news. AI is the big category. ChatGPT is one product inside it, made by a company called OpenAI. Think of AI as “cars” and ChatGPT as one popular model of car. There are others: Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and more. They all do similar things. You type or speak in plain language, and they help you write, plan, explain, or figure something out.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! You do not need all of them. You need one that you actually open and use. Picking three is how people end up using none. The differences matter to power users, but for what you are doing this week, any of the main ones will serve you well. The skill is the same across all of them, and you already have it: ask clearly, read what comes back, ask again.

This connects to something you already understand. You do not own every brand of phone to make a call. You picked one and learned it. Same here.

A pastor I worked with kept apologizing during our first call. He said he had only tried ChatGPT and assumed he was behind because his nephew kept mentioning three other tools. I asked him what he had actually done with it. He had written a whole week of small-group discussion questions in twenty minutes. I told him the truth: the nephew with five apps open had written nothing. One tool, used, beats five tools, admired.

The goal was never to collect tools. The goal is to get something done with your own two hands and a little help. One door you actually walk through is worth more than a building you only stand outside of.

Try This Today: Pick one tool and only one. ChatGPT is a fine choice. Open it and ask it the same kind of question you would ask a knowledgeable friend, like “explain the difference between ChatGPT and AI to me like I’m new.” Read the answer. That is your tool for the week.

Before You Go: Which one tool are you going to commit to this week, and what made you pick that one? AI this, AI that. Everyone around you talks about it like you should already understand it, and you don’t, not really. So you nod along and quietly wonder if you missed the meeting where they explained it. You didn’t. Nobody did. Most of the people using that word can’t define it either.

So here’s the plain version. AI is a tool that understands regular language and helps you do things that used to take a person. That’s it. It’s not a robot. It’s not a brain. It’s not coming to life. Think of it as a very fast, very well-read assistant that you talk to in plain words instead of code.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! You just tell it what you want, the way you’d ask a smart coworker. And you’ve already done a version of this for years. The autocomplete that finishes your sentences. The voice that answers when you ask your phone for the weather. The suggested replies at the bottom of your email. That’s all early AI. This is that, grown all the way up. The one skill it really asks of you, you already have. You know how to ask for what you need.

A friend of mine, a retired teacher, sat down with me last month with her arms crossed, certain this wasn’t for her. I asked her to do one thing: tell it to write a birthday message for her grandson who just made the basketball team. She typed it like she was texting me. Ten seconds later she had three versions. She picked the one that sounded most like her, changed two words, and sent it to him right there. Then she looked up at me and said, “That’s it? That’s the thing everyone’s so afraid of?”

That’s the thing everyone’s so afraid of.

The thing they called complicated was just unfamiliar. Unfamiliar is not the same as hard. You were never behind. You were just never shown.

Try This Today: Open a free AI tool, ChatGPT works fine, and ask it one real question you’d normally type into Google. Pull it straight from your day: “help me write a short thank-you note to a volunteer,” or “give me three dinner ideas using what’s in my fridge.” Don’t study it. Just ask, and see what comes back.

Before You Go: What’s one thing you’ve been afraid to ask about AI because you thought you should already know it? Tell me in the comments. I read every one.

Shaun Merritt-Scott — Certified AI Consultant and founder of the AI with Purpose & Prosperity Institute. Good. Now let’s do the fun part — let’s actually put it to work.

Because here’s what nobody tells you: you don’t need some big, impressive “AI project” to feel the difference. The magic shows up in the small, repetitive stuff that quietly eats your week. The emails. The planning. The “ugh, where do I even start” tasks.

Thanks for reading Shaun's Substack! Pick one. That’s all. Let it earn your trust, then come back for the next.

1. Write the email you’ve been avoiding

You know the one. The follow-up. The thank-you. The announcement that’s been sitting in your head for three days.

Don’t stare at the blank screen — describe it out loud to AI and let it give you a first draft to shape. Try: “Help me write a warm, clear email to my members about our event next Saturday. Keep it under 150 words and friendly.” You’ll go from blank page to “okay, I can work with this” in about ten seconds.

2. Turn one idea into many

This is my favorite, because it multiplies work you’ve already done.

Wrote a nice paragraph? Gave a little talk? Hand it to AI and say: “Turn this into three short social media posts in a warm, encouraging voice,” and paste your text. One piece of thinking becomes a week of content. You’re not creating more — you’re stretching what you’ve already got.

3. Explain something in plain language

We all have that topic we nod along to but don’t fully get. A contract clause. A new tool. Something you want to teach but haven’t found the words for.

Ask: “Explain this to me like I’m brand new, in plain language, with one everyday example.” No judgment, no jargon, no feeling silly for asking. It’s like having a patient tutor on call who never makes you feel behind.

4. Plan something, step by step

A workshop. A church program. A client launch. The overwhelm usually isn’t the work — it’s holding all the pieces in your head at once.

Try: “Help me plan [your event]. Give me a step-by-step checklist with timing, and flag anything I might be forgetting.” Suddenly the mountain becomes a list. And lists, you can do.

5. Brainstorm your way unstuck

When you’re staring at a wall — names, ideas, ways to grow — you don’t need the perfect answer. You need options to react to.

Ask for ten. “Give me 10 practical, low-cost ideas for [your goal], then tell me which 3 you’d start with.” Even if you toss eight of them, one will spark the thing you couldn’t see on your own.

Your one assignment

Don’t try all five. Pick the one that made you go “oh, I’d actually use that” — and do it this week. Ten minutes. That’s the whole assignment.

The point isn’t to become an AI power-user overnight. It’s to get a little time back, feel a little lighter, and prove to yourself that this is for you too.

Want these five already written out as copy-and-paste prompts — plus a simple 7-day plan to put them to work? A few of you wrote back with some version of the same honest question:

“Okay, Shaun — but where do I even start? I don’t want to look foolish.”

I love that question, because it means you’re ready. So before you open a single AI tool, I want to hand you three things. Not technical things. Mindset things. Get these, and the fear mostly melts — because the fear almost always comes from believing something about AI that just isn’t true.

Here they are.

1. AI is an assistant, not a genie

A genie reads your mind and grants the perfect wish. AI does not. It’s more like a brilliant, eager new assistant who showed up to work today knowing a lot about the world in general — and absolutely nothing about you, your people, or what you actually need. Until you tell it.

So the secret isn’t typing the magic words. It’s giving good direction.

Watch the difference. Type “write me a newsletter” and you’ll get bland, beige nothing. But type “write a warm 200-word newsletter inviting my church members to Sunday’s potluck, friendly and a little playful” — and suddenly it’s useful. Same tool. The only thing that changed was how clearly you told it what you wanted.

You don’t need fancier words. You need to talk to it like a capable helper who needs the details.

2. You can’t break it — so go ahead and play

This is the one that frees people, so hear me clearly: there is no wrong way to do this.

Most beginners freeze because they’re treating AI like a test they might fail. It isn’t a test. It’s a conversation. If the first answer isn’t quite right, you don’t start over and you don’t apologize — you just say “make it shorter,” or “that’s too formal, warm it up,” or “try again, but for a younger audience.” It adjusts. Then you adjust again. That back-and-forth is the skill.

You will not break it. You can’t delete the internet. You can’t embarrass yourself in front of a machine. So poke at it. Ask the “dumb” question. Experiment like nobody’s watching — because nobody is.

3. Your judgment is still the most important tool in the room

Here’s the one nobody warns the beginners about, and it’s the most important of the three.

AI will hand you a confident answer every single time — even when it’s wrong. It can draft, suggest, summarize, and speed you up beautifully. But it does not know your values, it does not know your people, and it does not always know the truth. You do.

So the rule is simple: read everything before you use it. You are the editor. You are the final yes or no. AI brings you a first draft; you bring the wisdom, the discernment, and the heart. That never gets handed off. That’s the part of you that made people trust you in the first place — and no tool gets to touch it.

So here’s your permission slip

You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to start a conversation with a helpful assistant, stay curious, and keep your judgment switched on.

That’s it. That’s the whole on-ramp.

If you’d like those three mindsets turned into actual first steps — including simple prompts you can copy and paste today and a gentle 7-day plan — that’s exactly what my free AI Starter Guide is for. More than two decades of that was in educational technology, which is a fancy way of saying I was the person in the room when something new and intimidating got rolled out, and everyone looked around to see who was going to panic first. I trained teachers, students, and administrators through wave after wave of “this changes everything.” Some of it did. Most of it didn’t.

So when people ask me if I’m excited about AI or afraid of it, my honest answer is: neither. I’m paying attention. There’s a difference.

The question almost everyone is asking

Here’s what I hear most, usually said quietly, sometimes with a nervous little laugh:

“Am I already behind?”

If that’s the question sitting in your chest right now, I want to take it off you for a second. You are not behind. You’re right on time. The fact that you’re reading this means you’ve already done the hardest part, which is deciding to look instead of look away.

But I’ll be straight with you, because that’s the only way I know how to be:

AI can’t replace you — but if you choose not to learn it, you may find yourself left behind.

Both halves of that sentence are true at the same time, and most people only hear one of them. Let me give you the part most people miss.

The part most people miss

Everyone’s arguing about the wrong question. The loud question is “Will AI replace me?”

The real question — the one that actually decides your next few years — is this:

What part of you was never meant to be handed off to a machine, and are you protecting it?

Because here’s the thing. AI is genuinely good at the busywork. The first drafts. The summaries. The “help me get started” that used to eat your whole Saturday. Let it have that. Truly. Hand it over.

But it cannot do the things that made people trust you in the first place:

It doesn’t have your voice — the way only you say things.

It doesn’t have your values — your faith, your standards, your sense of what’s right.

It doesn’t have your judgment — the final yes or no that only you can give.

And it will never have your relationships — the call, the prayer, the conversation that needs a real human heart.

That’s the part you protect. That’s the part you were never meant to outsource. My whole approach comes down to one belief: I help people integrate AI into their life and work without losing the parts of themselves they were never meant to outsource.

So the danger was never that AI would replace you. The danger is that you’d sit on the sidelines so long that the people you’re meant to serve couldn’t find you anymore. Learn the tool. Keep your soul. You can absolutely do both.

Who this is for

If you’re a beginner who feels behind — this is for you. If you’re an educator, a ministry leader, a woman building something of her own, or a small business owner wearing nine hats — this is especially for you.

I’m not here to make you a tech expert. I’m here to help you feel clear, capable, and like yourself while you use these tools. No jargon. No shame. Just one steady step at a time.

Start here

If you want a gentle, plain-language first step, I made something for you.

Grab my free AI Starter Guide. It walks you through what AI actually is, gives you prompts you can use today, and lays out a simple 7-day plan to get going — without losing yourself in the process. [DOWNLOAD AI STARTER GUIDE

I’m so glad you’re here.
